The Epic Poem of Ramayana

THE EPIC POEM OF RAMAYANA

BY TRILOK DEBBAD

King Dasharata was in despair,
He could not shake his fear,
Without an apparent heir to his throne,
Able, just, and worthy of his crown

He asked the gods for a son,
So that the demons would run,
Then the gods thought this was their chance,
To get rid of Ravana at last

When King Dasharata had his sons,
Then he thought that he was done,
Prince Rama was the oldest of all,
The king hoped that he’d never fall

Later on there was one request,
From the king’s very best,
His wife demanded to send Rama to the forest,
Soon the king was not very modest.

Rama’s wife Sita and his brother Lakshmana went with him,
To make sure that he would survive,
and that he would never be recognized,
But soon something came amiss

One day a demon named Surpanakha came,
She fell in love with Rama as she gazed,
She asked Rama to marry her but when he said no,
She tried to kill Sita but Lakshmana chopped her nose and said go

Surpanakha told her brother Khara what they had done,
Khara took an army of demons and was gone,
Khara told Rama that he shall pay,
When the battle was over and Rama had won Khara could not say

Surpanakha was mad and found Ravana and told him everything,
Ravana wanted Sita for his own because he thought she was something,
Ravana and his uncle both went to the forest to capture Rama‘s wife,
His uncle turned into a deer and thought everything’s going to be all right

Sita turned and fell in love with the deer,
She said “ Rama can you catch that deer over here.”,
Rama suspected something about that deer and told Lakshmana to guard Sita over there, Sita was worried about Rama and hoped he was not lost somewhere

Sita told Lakshmana to go find Rama and make sure he’s okay,
Lakshmana didn’t want to leave Sita so he made a circle around her and told her to stay, Ravana turned into a Brahmin and asked Sita for food,
So Sita stepped out of the circle and Ravana grabbed her and put her in his chariot so she thought that he was rude

A bird named Jatayu tried to stop Ravana but he cut off the birds wings and sped to his kingdom, Sita was scared and cried for freedom, When Rama and Lakshmana came back they saw Jatayu dying and asked him if he knew where Sita was, Jatayu said Ravana had captured Sita and took her to his kingdom

Jatayu died in Rama’s hands,
Rama found out Sita was in Ravana’s land,
As they continued their search they met Hanuman who was a monkey,
Hanuman agreed to help Rama find Sita who was in Ravana’s hands which was very unlucky

Rama gave Hanuman his ring so Sita would recognize it,
Hanuman took an army and found Sita and when he showed her the ring she immediately lit, Hanuman told Sita that he must tell Rama where she is captured, When Hanuman tried to escape he was tortured

Ravana set Hanuman’s tail on fire,
Hanuman leapt back to the mainland and soon he was tired,
He told Rama where Sita was trapped,
Rama soon had a plan to hatch

Rama began building a bridge to Lanka,
Ravana saw and called his giant brother Kumbhkarna,
He told Kumbhkarna that they’re being attacked and told him to go into battle, When he went into battle he held his hands up and saw his ax rattle

Kumbhkarna killed a lot of monkeys and bears,
When Rama shot his head off no one except Ravana would dare,
When Ravana heard the news he was mad,
But when this battle is over he knew Rama would be sad

Ravana called his son Indrajit and told him to enter battle,
Indrajit said with braveness all of this he can handle,
Indrajit entered battle and killed thousands,
But then Hanuman heals all the wounded

Ravana was mad and ordered Indrajit to go back,
But when Indrajit went back to battle he found something he lacked,
When lakshman shot Indrajit’s head off, Ravana was filled with anger,
He went into battle with his trusty dagger

Ravana told Rama he can kill him in a second,
With all of his favorite weapons,
Rama didn’t care and killed Ravana with one arrow
At last the gods were free and Rama and Sita were no longer sorrow
